Outsource SEO to India in 2026: Real Costs, Risks and How to Vet an Agency

Short answer: When you outsource SEO to India, expect to pay $300–$800 a month for a basic package and $800–$2,500 a month for a full-service retainer, against a US agency band of roughly $100–$149 per hour. The savings are real, but they only hold if you own every account, demand a public list of every link built, and have a native speaker edit anything published under your name. This guide shows you how to vet an Indian SEO agency in under two weeks, and the contract clauses that protect you if it goes wrong.

Disclosure: Kesar Technolab is an SEO and AI visibility agency based in Ahmedabad, India. We wrote this guide for founders and marketing leads in the US, UK, Australia and the Gulf who are deciding whether to outsource SEO to India, including the cases where you should not hire an Indian agency at all, us included.

Outsource SEO to India in 2026: costs, risks and agency vetting guide

Who this guide is for

  • Startup founders and SMB owners in the US, UK, Australia, UAE or Saudi Arabia who are paying (or have been quoted) local agency rates and want to know whether offshore SEO is a real option.
  • In-house marketers who need execution capacity (technical fixes, content, AI search optimization) without adding headcount.
  • Agencies looking at white label SEO in India to deliver work under their own brand.

What it costs to outsource SEO to India in 2026

Pricing from Indian agencies falls into four models. The figures below are September 2026 market ranges published by Wisemonk, set against US agency hourly bands drawn from Clutch data.

Engagement modelIndia (USD / month)What you typically get
Basic package$300–$800Technical audit, on-page fixes, a few blog posts, monthly ranking report
Full-service retainer$800–$2,500Technical SEO, content strategy and production, link outreach, analytics, strategy calls
Staff augmentation (one specialist)$1,500–$3,500A dedicated SEO working inside your tools and stand-ups
Direct hire via an Employer of RecordSalary $9,000–$18,000/yr + EOR feeYour own full-time employee in India, managed by you

The hourly view: Indian agencies typically bill $25–$50 per hour. The US agency band sits at $100–$149 per hour, and a mid-level US consultant at $80–$150. In plain terms, an Indian agency hour costs roughly a quarter to a half of a US agency hour.

If you also need your brand to show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, budget separately for that work. We break down those numbers for India, the US and the EU in our AI visibility agency pricing guide.

Where the savings come from, and where they don't

Most “70% cheaper” pitches skip over one fact: the saving applies only to labour. Several big line items cost the same wherever your agency sits.

  • SEO tools are priced in USD globally. Semrush, Ahrefs and AI visibility trackers cost an Indian agency the same as a US one. A cheap retainer often means the agency is skipping paid tools, or sharing one login across 40 clients.
  • Links and digital PR are priced by the publication, not the agency. A placement on a respected UK trade site costs the same whoever pitches it. If a quote includes “50 high-DA backlinks” for $500, those links are almost certainly bought from private blog networks.
  • Native editing is a real cost. Content written for a US or UK reader needs a native-level edit. Budget for it inside the retainer or on your side.

Net result: on a well-run engagement, expect to save 40–65% on total spend rather than the 80% the cold emails promise. That is our working estimate from the labour share of a typical retainer, not a market survey.

The 6 risks of SEO outsourcing in India, and how to neutralise each one

1. Paid links and private blog networks

Bought links are still the most common shortcut, and they can earn your site a manual action from Google. Fix: make a full link log (URL, date, anchor text, cost if any) a monthly deliverable written into the contract.

2. Thin AI-generated content at scale

Publishing 30 unedited AI articles a month is cheap to produce and expensive to clean up. Fix: cap volume, demand named human editors, and require at least one original data point, example or expert quote per article.

3. Vanity reporting

Reports full of “keywords in the top 100” hide whether anyone is buying. Fix: agree in writing that the primary KPIs are qualified leads, pipeline or revenue from organic and AI search. Rankings are a supporting metric only.

4. Copy that reads as translated

The grammar is fine but the rhythm is wrong for an American or British reader, and conversion suffers. Fix: ask for samples written for your market, and budget for a native edit.

5. Account ownership lock-in

Some agencies create Search Console, GA4 or Google Business Profile accounts under their own email. When you leave, the history leaves with them. Fix: you create every account; the agency is added as a user.

6. SEO-only thinking in an AI search market

Many offshore agencies still sell 2019-style SEO. Buyers now shortlist vendors inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and an agency that never checks those surfaces leaves a growing share of demand on the table. Fix: ask how they measure AI citations. Our comparison of an AEO agency vs an SEO agency explains what to listen for.

How to vet an Indian SEO agency: a 12-point checklist

  1. Proof in your market. Ask for two case studies from your country or a similar English-speaking market, with Search Console screenshots rather than tool estimates.
  2. References you can call. At least one current client, reachable by video call.
  3. Named team. Who exactly will work on your account, and what share of their week will it get?
  4. Link policy in writing. Do they buy links? What happens if they do?
  5. Content process. Who writes, who edits, and what is AI-assisted? Ask to see a brief and an edited draft.
  6. Tool stack. Which paid tools will be used on your account? Are logins dedicated or shared?
  7. Technical depth. Can they explain your three biggest technical issues after a 30-minute look at your site?
  8. AI search capability. How do they track mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity? Do they work on schema, entity data and AI-readable site structure?
  9. Reporting sample. Ask for a redacted monthly report. Look for lead and revenue attribution, not just rankings.
  10. Time zone plan. Who joins your weekly call, and at what time? (See the overlap table below.)
  11. Contract terms. Notice period, IP ownership, data protection: see the clause list below.
  12. A paid trial. Commission a 2–4 week audit sprint before you sign a 12-month retainer.

Red flags vs green flags

Red flagGreen flag
“Guaranteed #1 ranking on Google”Forecasts given as ranges, with stated assumptions
Fixed numbers of backlinks per monthLink targets tied to specific pages and outreach angles
Will not share who does the workNamed strategist plus named specialists
12-month lock-in with no exit clause30-day notice after an initial 3-month term
Reports only rankings and “traffic”Reports leads, conversions and AI citation share
Creates accounts under the agency’s emailAsks you to create accounts and add them as users

Contract clauses to insist on

  • Account ownership: all Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4, Google Business Profile and CMS accounts are owned by you.
  • IP assignment: all content, briefs, code and data produced belong to you on payment.
  • Link disclosure: a monthly log of every off-site link and mention acquired, and a ban on paid link schemes.
  • Data protection: if you hold UK or EU personal data, sign a data processing agreement covering UK GDPR / EU GDPR.
  • Exit: 30 days’ notice after the initial term, with a full handover of files and access.
  • Currency and invoicing: fix the fee in USD, GBP, AUD or AED to avoid exchange-rate surprises. Indian agencies invoicing overseas clients can usually zero-rate GST under a Letter of Undertaking (LUT), so ask whether yours does, and confirm the treatment with your accountant.

Time zone overlap: making offshore SEO work day to day

India runs on IST (UTC+5:30) and does not observe daylight saving, so the overlap shifts when your clocks change.

Your locationBest meeting window (your time)Same moment in India (IST)
UK (GMT, winter)09:00–12:0014:30–17:30
UK (BST, summer)09:00–13:0013:30–17:30
US East (EST)08:00–09:3018:30–20:00
US West (PST)17:00–19:00 (prev. day)06:30–08:30
Sydney (AEDT)13:00–16:0007:30–10:30
Dubai (GST)08:30–16:3010:00–18:00

Practical rule: keep one live call a week and run everything else async (a shared task board plus a Loom walkthrough with each report). For US and Australian clients, the time difference becomes an advantage: fixes ship while you sleep.

Outsource SEO to India or hire locally: a quick decision guide

  • Outsource to India if your budget is under $3,000 a month, your needs are execution-heavy (technical, content, on-page, AI readiness), and you can give a clear weekly direction.
  • Hire locally if you need heavy digital PR in your home press, on-site workshops, or deep regulated-industry knowledge (legal, medical, financial).
  • Use a hybrid if you have both needs: a local strategist or PR specialist plus an Indian execution team is often the best value per dollar.

FAQ: outsourcing SEO to India

How much does it cost to outsource SEO to India?

Basic packages run about $300–$800 a month and full-service retainers about $800–$2,500 a month. A dedicated specialist through staff augmentation costs about $1,500–$3,500 a month. Indian agency hourly rates are typically $25–$50.

Is outsourcing SEO to India safe?

Yes, if you control the risks: own every account, require a monthly link log, ban paid link schemes in the contract, and start with a short paid trial. Most bad outcomes come from agencies that buy links or publish unedited AI content at volume.

Can an Indian SEO agency rank a US, UK or Australian website?

Yes. Rankings depend on content quality, technical health and authority, not on where the agency sits. What matters is native-quality copy, link-building relationships in your target market, and correct geo-targeting (hreflang, local schema, Google Business Profile).

What is white label SEO in India?

White label SEO means an Indian team does the work and your agency delivers it to your client under your own brand. It works best for technical audits, content production and reporting, with client strategy kept in-house.

How long before outsourced SEO shows results?

Technical fixes and indexing improvements show up in 4–8 weeks. Meaningful lead growth usually takes 4–6 months, with breakeven around 9–12 months for a new or low-authority domain.

Should my outsourced SEO agency also handle AI search (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity)?

Ideally, yes. AI assistants now influence vendor shortlists, and the work overlaps heavily with SEO (schema, entity data, answer-first content, third-party mentions). Ask any agency how they measure AI citations before you sign.
